Harlow Grading Competition

June 22nd

A good day for trophy’s but unfortunately no qualifications. The club had 18 entries, but following withdrawals that was reduced to 14 who took part on the day. Again our thanks go to Anne Withington, Adrienne Keelin, Max Fagelman and Paul Robertson, who officiated for the club throughout the day, without their time and effort, we wouldn’t be able to put in an entry.

The day started early for a few of our competitors, namely our new girls, Naomi Waldock and Anna Stephenson who have been bouncing at Chesterton. Unfortunately, due to a mix-up, both their voluntary’s were just 9 moves. Something we have to work on. They both had very good form marks, and did extremely well to be placed 14th and 17th respectively out of 25 entries in the under 13 grade 5. Daniella Stephenson managed 8th out of 18 entries place in a hard fought competition in the Under 11’s grade 5. Anna Chandler came 9th out of 18 in the under 15 grade 5 competition, scoring her highest ever form marks, so well done there. Michael Keelin was embroiled in a battle for a medal in the under 17 grade 4 competition, but despite going into the final in 4th place and 0.1 ahead of the boy behind, the pressure told and he ended in 5th place. Jo Withington, despite nerves and some indifferent training before the competition managed 5th place in a very competitive grade 4 under 17’s group. Sophie Housden continues to do well in grade 3 under 17 girls, despite this being only her 1st season in the grade. She managed an excellent 4th place just 0.2 off joint 2nd place. Cameron Fullerton once again took 1st place in the Under 17 grade 5 competition. Hopefully we’ll see Cameron move up with the new routines in September.

Finally to our medal winners; Trinity Kelly had been leading after the set routine in the under 9 girls grade 5, but increased difficulty tariff from some of her opponents saw her drop to 3rd place in the final standings. So another great result, but some work on form and difficulty is due over the summer. Harry Frostick did extremely well to gain 3rd place in the under 15 grade 5 competition, he’s coming along well. Eddie Robertson did marvellously to take 2nd place in the under 13 grade 5 competition, just 0.5 off 1st place. Chloe Young was in a comfortable 2nd place in the under 17 grade 5 competition. That just leaves the grade 4 under 17 boys comp. Once again our team of Joe Chandler, Max Fagelman and Michael Keelin took the team competition, but it was the battle at the top that was the best of the day. After round 1, Joe and Max were tied in 1st place, after round 2 Joe was in 2nd place and Max in third, with Michael in 4th. And even after a hard fought final the medal positions stayed the same, with Max coming 3rd and Joe taking silver.

Starting in September the new competition structure will come into force, form and control will become much greater factors in the scoring regimes. We will need to spend time and effort to improve in those areas if we are to maintain our impressive medal hauls.
