South East Gala - Eastleigh - 9th February 2008
Our first Grade 2 competition of the season brought about an early start. Head Coach, Tony Fagelman was met at the world famous Comfort Cafe in Abington by the McKenna family at 6.00am. Katie-Beth and her sister Charlotte were fast asleep in the car when we set off to Southampton. With an estimated journey time of 2 hours and 20 minutes, there was some concern we wouldn't make it in time for the 9.00am start. Despite the sat-nav failing for the first 90 minutes, we got it working 10 miles from the destination and arrived with an hour to spare. Pleanty of time for breakfast in the excellent sports centre.
It was fantastic for Tony to see so many faces from the past, and he spent the morning just renewing old acquaintances, while of course watching Katie-Beth's warm-ups and routines.
As is usual, luck had placed Katie-Beth in her very first Grade 2 as the very first competitor of the day and with 45 competitors a lot to compete with. Four warm-up routines hadn't really settled her nerves, but she managed to pull off a reasonable set routine, but was then subject to the inevitable judges discussion. Dissapointing marks were displayed, with a round score of 19.4, but she had completed her first objetcive which was to get through the routine succesfully. A slightly better perfomance in the voluntary round gave her a final round score of 43.0. Not bad for her first competition at this level and certainly enough to make the trip worthwhile and her family and of course our head coach, Tony, proud of her performance.
So well done to Katie-Beth, a good solid start to her grade 2 season and Cangaroos only second ever Grade 2 performer. Next gala competition, 30th March in Hull.
