Date: Sunday 5th October 2008 at Brentwood
Entries close: TBC
Entry ages: 4 years +
The first competition of the new season was held in Brentwood on 2nd October 2008. This was the first competition using the new routines and this caused quite a bit of confusion on the day.
The entry from Cangaroos was quite small, mainly due to the fact that members weren’t yet confident in their routines to perform them in competition, so just a small contingent of 9 competitors and two officials made their way to Brentford.
The biggest shock of the day however was the competitive entry of Head Coach Tony Fagelman, after months of nagging from the members he came out of retirement, some 22 years since he last competed in an individual competition. Bouncing in Cangaroos only team in the over 15 Boys regional E group, the three team members put up a reasonable show. Max Fagelman beat his dad convincingly and should have taken the gold medal if it wasn’t for a misunderstanding over the level of difficulty allowed. So, Max took silver, Tony, trailed in a full one point behind him in 3rd place after two rather disappointing routines by his own standard (but not bad for a 47 year old!) and Michael was just beaten out of 4th place and had to settle for 5th.
Grace Pike had her best ever round of competitive scores, coming a credible 11th out 19 girls in the u11 regional G group. Frances Pickup also came 11th out of 16 girls, bouncing at her highest level yet in a mixed age group at regional F. Her sister, Imogen was over penalised for a mistake in her routine and despite performing well in her voluntary routine came in 6th out 11 entries in the O15 girls regional E group. Johanna Withington in the same group, who had had a few weeks of worry during training pulled out two good routines, which placed her just outside the medals in 4th Cameron Fullerton on the Boys regional F group and Sophie Housden in the o15 G regional D group both had errors in their first routines and struggled to make an impression. Cameron was placed 5 and Sophie 14th.
We now look forward to the Regional grading competition in Ipswich on 12th October. Once again Cangaroos entry is going to be quite small, but we are hoping for better things.
