Harlow Grading 2009

Date: Sunday 29th March 2009 at Harlow

Entries close: TBC

Entry ages: 4 years +

A reduced entry for this grading competition, due to injury, school trips and various other things that get in the way. So Cangaroos made our way to Harlow with just 6 competitors. The day didn’t start well, Max Fagelman, competing in his first ever over 15 Grade D grading injured himself in warm-up and although doing a steady performance in the first round, putting himself in 7th place, the injury told in the 2nd round and he ended up 8th equal. One good point though was he performed his highest ever tariff in competition, with a difficulty of 5.4. Next up was Katy-Beth McKenna, competing in the under 15 grade D competition, against girls 2 or 3 years older than her. KB also had a good first round but things didn’t go to well in the second round and she only completed three moves. She did make the final round and managed all 10 skills ending in a credible 8th position. Next up was Jo Withington, competing in the over 15 grade E. After training well all week, we had high hopes for qualification, a steady first round routine gave her a chance, but disaster struck in the second round and Jo had to settle for 9th place.

Our best results of the day followed. In the Over 15 Grade F boys competition, Harry Frostic did two good rounds to take 1st place in a very close completion that had to be decided on count-back to award the medals between 1st and 2nd a fabulous improvement on last year's 3rd place. In the Under 15 Grade F girls competition Naomi Waldock just failed by 0.8 to qualify for the next grade and after performing two good routines came a very credible 4th equal, just outside the medals but more importantly a jump of 10 places on last years Harlow competition.

Our final competitor of the day was Ed Robertson in the Under 15 Grade F boys competition. Ed, who had been winning trophy’s in this level in previous competitions performed steadily, and kept up his medal success to come 3rd.

So we have to accept a mediocre day for Cangaroos, 2 medals out of 6 competitors could be considered a good return and would have been if not for the high hopes. Two competitions in April, hopefully we will see more medals in the Cangaroos trophy cabinet.
