On Sunday 21st February, Cambridge Cangaroos travelled to the north of the region to compete in the 2nd annual Wisbech Open. The Wisbech Open is aimed at beginners and novices, although there are grades for our more experienced performers to compete in.
Last year we had our biggest ever open entry, this year we superseded that with 27 entrants, prior to the comp and 24 competing on the day. And what an incredibly successful day it was for our club. Possibly our most successful event ever with 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronzes in the individual events and team golds in two events. We also have to remember, that for the majority of our members this was their first ever Open competition, so that’s an even bigger reason to celebrate the success.
We started the day in the K grade, this is for complete beginners, where a five bounce routine is judged twice by the panel of judges. The club had 5 entrants in the under 11 grade, 3 in the girls and 2 in the boys and we have to remember that the majority of our entrants were all under 9. In her 1st ever competition Maia Leckey came 1st. Our success continued with Raygan Dickinson coming 2nd and just outside the medals, Scarlett East came 5th. In the boys event, Harry Mallows took gold and George Allen came 4th. These were excellent achievements from a large field. The team also took Gold.
In the under 11 J competition, a 10 bounce routine is required and again, the majority of our performers were in from our Roos, and therefore under 8 years old. We took an individual silver medal, with Alexandra Weaving coming 2nd, Lucy Grinnell came 5th, Justine Ross, 9th, Georgina Wriggley 10th, Katherine Chapman 11th and Abi Francis 14th. We had two teams in this event and took gold and bronze.
We also had another big entry in the under 15 girls J competition, with Scarlett Ross coming 11th, Faye Armitage came 14th, Hannah Dival came 16th, Niamh Finlayson came 19th and Rebecca Livermore came 20th. This was one of the biggest groups on the day, so well done to all who entered.
In the under 16 boys J competition our one competitor, Joe Leyland took gold and in the under 16 girls I competition, Bryony Carter also won Gold, adding to our tally of medals.
In the under 11 girls and boys I competition, Sydney Kelly continued her run of success taking Gold to add to her recent Club Champion award at our own Closed competition.
Moving into the more difficult competitive routines, in the under 15 G competition, Trinity Kelly took Gold with her highest score of the year, Grace Pike was just outside the medals in 4th, her best result this year and Rebecca Alexander came 6th. This excellent result also ended up in Team Gold.
In the boys under and over 13 G competition, James Able came 3rd and took the bronze medal and Dom Sutton came 4th, just outside the medals.
In the boys and girls under 15 E competition, Naomi Waldock unfortunately failed to complete her second routine but still managed a creditable 4th place.
In the Men’s and Ladies Over 15 D competition, Luis Pires came back from a mistake in his second routine to obtain the highest score of the day in the final and claim the bronze medal.
Our most successful competition ever, with more entries than ever before and more medals than ever. So well done to all those who took part and a big thank you to the officials who volunteered from the club to help the day run smoothly.
