Five members of Cambridge Cangaroos along with coaches and officials, travelled as part of the Eastern Region team to compete at the English National Championships on 27th October in a snowy South Shields. Winter has come early it would seem.
The club was delighted to have Andrew Aistrup representing us at the highest level as a judging official for the day and Club Head Coach, Tony Fagelman was one of the coaching team for our regional gymnasts. Former Club Chairman and current Chair of the Eastern Region, Stuart Kelly praised the Eastern Regional team results and how well they represented the region at the competition.
Cangaroos has 5 gymnasts selected, with the day starting slowly due to problems with equipment, the DMT competition was hastily re-arranged and Matthew Burson and Thomas Verdicchio both had to change in and out of their trampoline and DMT kit to compete at both events. It was a very close run event in the Junior boys DMT, with both boys competing at this level for the first time. Matthew beat Thomas by just 0.3 to take 13th place with a total score of 58.5 and Thomas took 14th with a total score of 58.2.
In the Junior boys Trampoline competition, Thomas took his revenge, with Matthew leading after the compulsory routines, Thomas stormed back with an impressive voluntary routine to take his place in the Finals and recording 12th place with a total score of 119.065. Matthew didn’t make the final and came 27th with a score of 76.130.
The boys paired up to take on the rest of England in the Junior boys synchronized competition. Where they performed magnificently, reaching the final and taking 5th place with a score of 105.700, missing 4th by just 0.1.
In the Junior girls DMT, Trinity Kelly, also taking part for the first time at this level had two solid passes to score 56.2 and was placed 17th.
In the Senior Mens Synchronized competition, Luis Pires and Nat Whittingham struggled to find any consistency and failed to complete 2 full routines. They managed 11th place with a total score of 46.300. Our other pair in the Mens competition took 3rd place and the bronze medal.
Luis had a much better time of it in the Senior Mens DMT competition. He was successful in both passes, performing a double double for the first time in competition in his 2nd pass and scoring a personal best. He came a credible 10th with a score of 60.1.
The region itself did extremely well in the Senior Ladies synchronised competition, taking silver and bronze.
The Region finished in a credible Xth place out of the 9 regions taking part. The season has now ended and there’s just the Cangaroos Club Competition to look forward to in 2012, before competition re-starts in January 2013.
