Cangaroos took two members to the Welsh Gala, held at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on the weekend of 21st & 22nd April 2012. A third member, Nat Wittingham was due to compete but withdrew the week before due to injury.
Both Trinity Kelly and Thomas Verdicchio had their own challenges to surmount and Head Coach Tony Fagelman had set them specific goals to achieve at the competition.
First up was Trinity Kelly. Trinity had been off the competitive scene for almost a year following injury and Tony had set her the goal of completing both routines. Trinity performed excellently and following the first round was lying in an unprecedented first place. Her second routine wasn’t as proficient as her first but she still managed a creditable 15th place, just 0.6 off the National Finals qualification score and well above the caution zone of bottom 20% of competitors.
Thomas competed next, with a goal of coming in 9th place or higher to ensure the caution he had received at the Midlands Gala in January was removed. Two competent routines put him =8th place at the end of the two rounds, but the count-back rule meant that he was placed 9th, just missing out on the day’s finals, but achieving his overall goal of removing the caution and avoiding relegation back to D.
So, Cangaroos National Finals team still has 4 members, with 3 club members still hoping to book their places at the National Finals in Birmingham in July. With just the North West Gala in June left to compete in, we are hopeful of gaining at least one more National finals berth.
