Cangaroos took two members to the Yorkshire Gala, held at the Gymtech Arena in Hull on the weekend of 17th & 18th March. Luis Pires was looking to achieve national finals qualification in DMT Fig B, having already secured qualification for Trampolining at National C. Matthew Burson, 11, was in the tricky situation of having to avoid a second consecutive caution as that would mean relegation back to Regional D grade.
Luis competed first in the Trampoline discipline and after a secure set routine was in 10th place and looking to final, but a mistake in his voluntary pushed him back to 12th place.
Matthew was up next and, although under huge pressure, showed great composure to post his highest set routine score of the season so far. Lying in 8th position he had to pull out a good voluntary routine to maintain his place, which he duly went on to do, qualifying for the final and eliminating the caution. After another consistent routine he climbed one place to 7th, his best result of the season so far � this being his first season at national level.
Finally, Luis was competing in the Fig B Double Mini Tramp competition, and was looking to reach the National Finals. Two excellent passes in the first round saw him through to the National Finals and was in 4th place going into the final. A weakness in his 3rd pass of 4 saw him eventually drop to 7th place.
So, a successful competition all-round, Cangaroos now has 4 National finalists, 3 in Trampoline and one in DMT. Our next stop is Cardiff on April 21st and 22nd where we hope to continue our successful season.
As well as our competitors, one of the clubs latest additions, Andrew Aistrup, took the opportunity to shadow judge for the first time at National level. Andrew is already a county level judge (as well as a grade E performer and Level 1 coach) and will now be doing his regional judging course in April. Having enough judges qualified to officiate at National competitions is required to allow the growing number of Cangaroos performers to compete at this level.
