The 2013 Brentwood Open was an eventful day for the Cangaroos. With the absence of our very own Neil Pike the duty of care for IT fell to Ali and Stuart. Both of them arrived at the crack of dawn to get everything set up in time ready for the day. By the time Tony's car roared into the car park the many competitors were all arriving along with our resident judges for the day; Myffy, Olga, Natasha, Grace and Jonathon. An extra thanks should also go out to our young helpers Kim, Trinity, Tarranne and Harry who (between food and ipad breaks were on hand to help.
As Stuart gnawed down on a well-earned breakfast sandwich and Ali look on hungrily; the first competitor of the morning was Macy Dexter in Club H. Her routines were consistent and she netted a safe 6th place and put a smile on her face. Closely after her was Charlie Love showing the girls group how it should be done coming in 5th. Closely after them for our express morning was Rhyannon in Regional G who completed two routines to finish 10th. Following them was the awesome-foursome of Katie, Lexi, Madeleine and Scarlett. Despite a couple of blips they add did themselves proud with a team first and positions ranging from 4th to 17th.
After a short break it was 'Squidley' (thanks Dave) Kelly in regional F. A great second routine saw her take 1st place - a cracking day for her, and then she returned to her iPad. Katie Evans performed her best ever routine in her vol and came 2nd in regional G. Following her was our lone-soldier Zach Goggin in regional D, it may have not been his best routines but he was undeniably in first place. Toby Chapman followed him by adding a 3rd place in Club H for the boys.
Following them was Ali in national C with his heart set on securing the much converted club tariff record. A good set routine set him in first place going into vols. Despite some killer warm-ups he crashed out on the second move of his vol causing a gasp of shock to all watching. However, thanks to the generosity of Brentwood and the chair of judges Nat, he was allowed to have a second hit at it and complete a whopping 8.6 tariff! In the interest of fair play he refused to be marked on form and therefore took 2nd place. The record table can be seen here. After him (and slightly less chaotically) was Rosie Males in Club H and her routines had the stability Ali lacked for her to finish 6th.
The next round saw Gabe take on his new routine and his massive improvement this past year shone through for him to finish 1st. Sophie followed him and despite some nervers took a confident second place in club H. Next up was the Regional G girls, Aaliyah and Alexa and they performed some good routines to finish 3rd and 9th. Hot on their tale was Abhi for the boys and two good routines from him once again saw him top the group. The final boy of the day was Charlie Rixon, who had a small blip in his first routine but recovered well to finish 16th.
It was then the turn of Ashlea and Mila who had been patiently waiting (well waiting anyway) the whole day to perform. Ashlea did two solid routines and finished 8th whilst Mila was once again on form to finish 1st.
A great day for the club again and we now look forward to the Dragons Open in November. Maybe we can even get Neil to compete in the next one? We drove back to Cambridge with smiles on our faces and listened to Tony's latest crazy massive playlist (yep one song all the way home :( )
