After an early morning training session at Sawston where Luis performed an essential stability test on one of the neighbouring trampolines the Cangaroos set off to Bath for the fifth gala of 2013. With Ali, Luis and Taranne all competing in National C and Ali and Luis also competing in synchro we were all set for an eventful weekend.
Tony burnt rubber down the M4 whilst politely reminding the other drivers on motorway discipline. Ali, Luis and Tony arrived with a half hour to spare and donned their competition faces. The crowd marvelled as the pair managed to complete only one routine in the warm up. Competition time came and a glorious start to the routine was followed by Luis getting lonely on his trampoline and jumping onto Ali’s for some company. After completing the second routine it was discovered that some confusion between the pair meant that the routine was only scored out of 8. Despite this they claimed a respectable fifth place coupled with some beaming grins of disbelief.
As Brigadier Liz Kendon arrived along with HRH Taranne the team met up with Andrew and set off to the 5* accommodation in Bath (a YMCA hostel). Once the cars were parked and baggage dumped we made our way to Jimmy’s Spice World and devoured portion after portion of international cuisine. As is customary with any Cangaroos meal Andrew made the usual intelligent remarks including but not limited to “What is the plural of duck?”. Once back at the hostel the Brigadier put us through our paces with some high-speed word games and amusing banter. A good night’s sleep was followed by a hearty breakfast and after what seemed like an eternity Luis arose from his slumber to join us. Once fed, we set off for competition and relaxed for a few hours.
First up was Taranne in her first ever gala. After two good routines she placed 34th and the club is so very proud of her for that.
Following her was Luis and Ali. Luis was keen to make National Finals as he had yet to do so. Two amazing high routines saw him not only qualify for finals but also gain promotion to FIG B and he now joins Matt and Myffy at the second highest competitive level. Unfortunately Ali was not so lucky as despite a really good set routine he crashed out after the last move and was not able to recover in the vol. Despite that they both made the final where Luis finished in 3rd place and collecting another gala medal for the club.
As the team journeyed home from a successful weekend we look forward to South Shields where Ali, Luis, Tarrane and Trinity will all compete again in the final gala of the season. Can we gain more promotions and finalists?
