A more civilised start to the day saw Cangaroos travelling to Coventry for the third Spring National Event. Following Matthew Burson’s success in Bath, hopes were high for an equally successful competition. Matthew was competing in the NDP 7 - 13/14 age group for Men. There was an increased field for this event and improved performances from the majority of the competitors made sure that this was going to be a true test of his improved performance ins 2014.
Following round one and the set routines, Matthew was in a strong 2nd place, 0.35 behind his 1st place rival, but recorded the highest Time of Flight score of the day. A competent voluntary routine in the 2nd round took him into 1st place, but although he outscored the previous leader, the gap was just too great and he ended up in 2nd place by just 0.055, that is the equivalent of less than 10cm on height on 1 jump, so the margin was extremely small.
The good news was that he achieved the qualifying score for National Finals and will go into the competition ranked in the top three in the country. Additionally, he has a silver medal to add to the Gold he took in Bath and the two Bronze medals he won in the 2013 season. Having achieved the necessary two qualifying scores, Cangaroos will not be attending the 4th and final Spring National Event in Newcastle in June and will use the time between now and the finals to consolidate Matthews routines.
With the knowledge that competition will be fierce at the Nationals, we look forward to the event in Telford on the weekend of July 5th & 6th.
