Saturday 2nd May and after a quick training session at Sawston, Zach, Mila, Abhi, judge Olga and head coach Tony headed off to Burgess Hill in Sussex for the first of the 2015 National League competitions. This was a big step up for all 3 competitors, For Zach, he was now bouncing at League 2 after his bronze medal winning success in the League 3 finals last year. Mila has also promoted to League 2 and Abhi was bouncing in his first ever National League competition at League 3.

First up was Abhi and after some specific pointers produced one of his better set routines. An even better voluntary routine saw Abhi reach the final in 4th place. In a tight final, Abhi was edged out of bronze to register 4th in his first ever National League competition, a great result for him and the club.

Next up was Mila, due to a mix-up she had been training the wrong set routine, so after some hasty changes on the Friday night, Mila entered the competition in a somewhat nervous state. However, Mila produced a steady set routine and was laying just outside the top 10 after the first round. Mila is still trying to find quality in her new high tariff routine and although she successfully completed the difficulty, her execution marks reflected the struggles she’s been having. However, from a strong field, we were all pleased that she managed 14th place and scored some ranking points towards the National League finals.

Last up was Zach, as a previous medallist at League 3, the pressure was on Zach to perform at this new level. In his first round he performed competently and steady but with an improving Time of Flight score. His 2nd round was also steady, but wasn’t quite enough to get him into the final, finishing in 9th place.

So a steady start to the National League season, all three Cangaroos scored ranking points and are on their way hopefully to securing a place at the National Finals which this year will be held at the Copper Bowl in the Olympic Park in November, so there is a great opportunity to compete in a truly world-class stadium graced previously by former Olympians. We look forward now to June for the next National league event in Hull, but before that we have the Regional Team Championships, a national event for teams from all 10 of the British Regions. Cangaroos has 6 competitors in the 51 strong team from the East, and we are the 2nd biggest club representing the Region.
