Cangaroos members made their way to the Welsh Institute of Sport for the Midlands zonal school finals looking to qualify both team and individual places to the Finals in Wigan in March. First up were our Elite u14 girls, with Rhyannon Kinnley competing in the 1st flight of a large group of girls. The competition was of an extremely high standard and although Rhyannon scored some of her best scores so far this season, but it still wasn’t threatening the top gymnasts.
In the 2nd flight, Aaliyah Kinnley, Alexa Hanson and Sydney Kelly made up the remainder of the Saffron Walden County High school Elite u14 team. High quality routines from all three girls, especially Sydney saw the girl’s team take a very credible 3rd place and Sydney took 6th place in the individual competition. Unfortunately, only the top two teams qualify through to the finals, so it’s a very well done to the girls for this school season.
Next up was James Able competing for The Perse School. Two high scoring routines had James in 2nd place after the first flight. A nerve wracking watch of the 2nd flight saw James drop to 3rd place, but no-one else challenged and he secured his bronze medal and a place in the Finals, well done James.
Last up was Matthew Burson, also competing for The Perse School. One of the highest scoring set routines of the day put Matthew in 1st place after the first round and then the highest 2nd round score and the highest overall total score of 59.7 saw him take 1st place by 2.5 marks and secure his place at the Finals.
The club would like to take this opportunity to thank our coaches, Scott Kinnley, Francoise Lucas and Tony Fagelman for making the long trip and we look forward to supporting Matthew and James in the finals in 7 weeks time.
