Cambridge Cangaroos took 5 gymnasts to the English Championship qualifying event in Stoke on 9th April. All 5 male gymnasts were competing in the Gold event:

Gabe Strydom-Green competed in the 13-14 male Gold group and produced 2 solid routines, both of which attained the qualifying score necessary for the NDP spring series later in the month. Gabe finished 3rd taking home the bronze, even with one of the lowest routine difficulties of the group.

Abhi MacDonald-Marlow (11-12 boys) performed a great first round routine, also attaining the required scores for the NDP spring series, even though his voluntary routine was not quite to the same standard, with his difficulty and time of flight he was able to join Gabe in bringing home a bronze.

Zach & James probably had the bigger challenge on the day with difficulty differences of between 4.5 and 4.9 between them and the winner. More than 50% higher than their own routines. But this did not put the boys off, who produced great first routines, both achieving the qualification scores. Unfortunately, a small mistake in the second round saw Zach's score lower than he hoped, whilst James went on to achieve the qualification scores in the voluntary routine also. James and Zach finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Finally, Matt Burson, using the event as a test for his new routine, was similarly against tough competition difficulty wise, with a gap of 2.4 between him and first place. Matt completed an excellent set routine with an 8.3 average and achieved the qualifying scores for the Elite event later in the month. However, Matt encountered a mistake in his voluntary routine which saw him finish the event in 4th place. Most of the boys were using the event as a pre-cursor to the spring series and fulfilled the purpose of the day, allowing them to take some learnings away from the day to put into practice over the next 3 weeks.

The next English Championship event is in May where we hope to be equally successful, and the boys will be joined by several of our female national competitors and for the first time at this level some of our gymnasts will enter the synchronised events. We look forward to the 1st of the Spring Event Series taking place on the 29th & 30th April in Nottingham, where our boys will compete for qualification to the NDP finals and the British Championships.

As always, our thanks go out to our coaches, Francoise Lucas, Scott Kinnley, Laura Able and Tony Fagelman and to our judges and officials, specifically Luis Pires and Jo Wardle who judged all day. We look forward now to the Spring Event Series in April for our NDP 8 and Elite gymnasts.
