13 members of Cambridge Cangaroos Trampoline Club took part in the Regional Semi-Final round of the National Development Programme Trampoline Competition at the weekend.

The quality of the gymnasts at all levels was a delight to see and the gymnasts from our club should all be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the day. With just the top 2 places available to qualify to the National Team Final, competition was going to be intense. Additionally, to qualify the gymnasts had to have a combined total execution score of 45.00, so that would drive up the quality as well.

First to compete was Poppy Budd, taking part in one of the larger groups, Level 2 womens 11-12. Poppy was just 0.1 short of the National Qualifying standard score with 44.9, but managed a very credible 12th in a very close competition.

Next up was Sydney Kelly in the Level 5 womens 15+ group. A close first round had her in 2nd place with lots of competition pushing her. But an excellent 2nd round score saw her take 1st place with a total score of 48.3 and she secured qualification for the Team finals.

A group of our gymnasts were all competing next across all three panels and our coaches were stretched thin.

Macy Dexter, Liam Whistler and Alasdair Macrae all competed and all did exceptionally well. Macy won our second medal of the day with Silver in the Level 3 womens 11-12 group and qualified with an excellent combined score 49.2 to the Team Finals. Then with a Bronze medal and 3rd place for Liam Whistler in the Level 4 Mens 13+ with a combined score of 46.8 and a reserve place for the Team finals.

Finally in this round, Alasdair Macrae was competing in the Level 7 Mens 17+ and was delighted to not only complete his two routines (as he’s struggled with one of the skills), but also to take 3rd place and the Bronze medal, just missing 2nd by 0.2 with a combined score of 46.8 and also achieving a reserve spot for the Team Final.

Rhiannon Monie was the next to bounce and competing in the Level 1 womens 9-10, another large group, Rhiannon was delighted to score 46.2 and take 13th place.

Following Rhiannon, Molly McGregor was next up, taking part in the Level 2 Womens 9-10 and two excellent routines saw her take 4th place, missing a medal by just 0.1 with a total score of 49.7.

The afternoon competitions started with Anya and Yasmin Snook competing in the Level 4 womens 13+ group. This was the biggest group of the day and Anya pulled out the best routines of the season for her combined score of 47.4 and 6th place. Yasmin had looked good in practice, but some minor errors saw her score reduced to 46.8 and 13th place.

Next up was Gemma White, competing in the Level 2 womens 13+ group. Unfortunately an error in her round when her hair touched the mat meant zero score for that routine. She came back well to score 23.5 and placed 22nd.

Henry Ashton competing in the Level 4 Mens 13+ also suffered a mishap in the 1st round, touching the mat on his last move, which meant he also scored zero, but went on to record a a good 2nd round score of 22.3 and take 10th place.

Oliver Burrell was the last of the boys to compete in the Level 1 Mens 13+ group and following two good routines, Oliver placed 3rd and took the Bronze for our 5th medal of the day. Our final competitor was Lexi Marlow who was competing in the Level 2 Womens 13+ group. Two steady routines saw her score 45.4 and take 17th place.

The club finished the day with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. With two qualifiers for the Regional Team Finals that will take place in June at the NIA. Last year, the club sent 5 gymnasts to the Finals as part of the victorious Team East. Hopefully we can be as successful in 2017.

As always, our thanks go out to our coaches, Francoise Lucas, Scott Kinnley, Laura Able and Tony Fagelman and to our judges and officials, specifically Luis Pires and Jo Wardle who judged all day. We look forward now to the Spring Event Series in April for our NDP 8 and Elite gymnasts.
