A small contingent of Cangaroos gymnasts travelled to Cardiff, National Institute for Sport at Cardiff Metropolitan University on 10th & 11th June. However, we had three fabulous performances from our Cangaroos. This season, the competition included the new scoring system for marking travel (known as 'horizontal displacement' and we were all interested to see how that would affect the overall scores and positions.
On Saturday, Sydney Kelly was our first competitor. Competing in the Ladies 15-16 age group in League 3, two excellent preliminary rounds saw her place 3rd and gain 60 ranking points towards qualification to the Season Finale. An excellent routing in her final round, saw her improve to the silver medal position, missing gold by just 0.01 points, that's the equivalent of just 10cm in height in a Time of Flight score).
Next up was Macy Dexter, competing in the Ladies 11-12 age group in League 3. This was Macy's first ever League competition and a big step up in competitive level for her. Two quality routines in the preliminary rounds saw her take 5th place and gain a ranking score of 36 points. In the final round, all the girls improved their scores, and Macy was content to retain 5th place. Macy scored a perfect 10 in her 'Horizontal Displacement score' in her final routine. An excellent outcome.
On Sunday, Gabriel Strydom-Green was competing in the Men's 13-14 age group in League 2. This was also a step up for Gabriel, who had competed at League 3 the previous season. Two high quality routines saw Gabriel also place 5th after the preliminary rounds and take a score of 36 points into the season Finals. Unfortunately, due to a serious accident during the Finals, they were delayed and moved onto another pair of trampolines. However, the incident didn't disturb Gabriel and he improved his placing to 4th, narrowly missing out on a medal.
The club would like to thank our officials and coaches who made the long journey to Cardiff to support our gymnasts. We look forward to the Regional Team Finals in Birmingham next weekend, followed by the League 2 event in South Shields the following weekend.
