Cangaroos made the long journey to South Shields on 24th and 25th June to compete in the second Trampoline League Event and the 4th competition in 4 weeks for some of our gymnasts and coaches.
It was an early start for Macy Dexter and Sydney Kelly with both of them competing first thing on the Saturday morning. Macy, competing in the 11-12 women's League 3 event was looking to repeat the success of her first League competition, but unfortunately it wasn't to be her day today and two good routines, but with some errors meant that she finished he competition in 10th place out of 27 entries with a total score of 77.89. However, she did score 20 ranking points, that takes her total so far this season to 56 and pretty much secures her qualification to the League Finals in November, where the top 24 ranked gymnasts across the 4 qualifying events will compete for the League titles.
Sydney, competing in the women's 15-16 League 3 event had an excellent first two rounds and was in 2nd place going into the finals. But an uncharacteristic error filled routine saw her initially drop to 7th place. So Sydney and parents took off to the beach, only to have to return later having found out that an error in the recording meant that she actually took a very credible 3rd place. So, with Sydney scoring 75 points to add to her 60 points earned in Cardiff, that guarantees her qualification to the finals.
Saturday night was spent at the pleasure arcades where the boys proceeded to win a huge number of prizes at the beach and a lovely seaside meal.
On the Sunday, the Cangaroos made their way back to the Sports Centre for what was to be an excellent day.
Both James Able and Abhi Marlow-McDonald were competing at the same time on Sunday morning so Cangaroos coaches, Tony and Laura were split up across the panels
James, competing in the Men's 15-16 League 1 events, who was only 1 day back from 6 weeks resting following injury and had virtually no training time, executed 3 superb routines and took 1st place, the Gold medal and 100 ranking points. A truly excellent performance.
Abhi, competing in the Men's 11-12 League 2 event also had an excellent competition, also completing 3 excellent routines and taking the silver medal, 2nd place and 75 ranking points.
Finally that morning, Gabriel Strydom-Green was competing in the Men's 13-15 League 2 event had a great 1st round, but an error in his 8th skill in his 2nd round routine, but an excellent recovery to complete the routine saw him drop to 3rd place going into the finals. An excellent final round though saw him narrowly miss gold and take the silver medal and 60 ranking points
In the final competition of the day, Abhi and Gabriel took to the competition floor in their first ever League Synchro competition. Two excellent routines saw them take 1st place, the gold medals and 100 ranking points.
We finished the competition with 2 Golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze, from 6 entries, so it was a good day at the office for our Cangaroos gymnasts. Plus, all 5 of our individuals and our synchro pair have all but guaranteed their qualifications to the League Finals in November.
The club would like to thank our officials and coaches who made the long journey to South Shields to support our gymnasts. Our final event before the summer break in the NDP Finals in Telford on 9th & 10th July and we wish Sydney and Matt the very best of luck in that.
