NDP Regional Semi Final

NDP Regional Semi Final 2019

Date: Sunday 17th March 2019 at Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield

Entries close: 2019-02-28

Entry ages: 9 years +

21 Cangaroos gymnasts qualified through to the East Region NDP Finals held on March 17th at the Hertfordshire University Sports Village. A bright almost sunny day greeted our gymnasts as we made the journey south to Hatfield.

There were a record number of entries for the competition from Clubs all over the East Region and Cangaroos were delighted to similar qualifications to 2018. Unfortunately, 2 dropped out of the competition prior to Sunday, and one had to pull out through injury on the day, but 18 Cangaroos took part in the 3 Club Grades (CDP) and 6 NDP grades. With 18 competitors our coaches were stretched across all 4 panels, but we would like to say thank you to Franky, Laura and Tony for the magnificent effort they put in. We also need to thank our Judges and all our willing volunteer marshals and recorders. Without your support we couldn’t take part in these events.

Our first competitors of the day were Alex and Jane, both competing at the Regional Semi-Finals for the first time, despite being some of our longest serving members. We were so please to see them both record 1st place in their respective groups; Alex in the Men’s 15+ Category 1 TPD group and Jane in the Women’s 15+ Category 1 TPD group. Both will now go on to represent the East Team at the Regional Finals.

Next to compete was Cameron Spence, again competing in his first Regional Semi-Final, he also took the Gold medal, coming 1st in the Men’s 13+ Club 3 competition. Unfortunately, for Club 1, 2 & 3 competitions, there is no further qualification to the National Finals, so Cameron will have to wait to next year and hopefully success will come his way in the NDP groups.

In the NDP 1 women’s 11-12 competition, Amelie did extremely will to finish in 8th position as this was one of the biggest groups of the day.

Unfortunately, our team in the NDP 1 women’s 13+ group was hit when Ellie was unable to compete due to illness. That left Annie France who completed both routines and secured a credible 22nd place and Ella Gerrard who had been in 2nd place after the 1st round but unfortunately following a mistake in round 2 had to settle for 28th place. Better luck next time ladies.

Next up were Lilly and Anabelle, competing in the NDP 1 women’s 9-10 age group. Again two great rounds from both girls saw Lilly come 12th and Anabelle 14th. Next up were our Level 2 gymnasts and Benjamin Spence also took home a medal like his brother, taking 3rd place in the men’s 11-12 competition. This also earned Benjamin a reserve spot on the East Team. In the NDP 3 groups Rhiannon Monie was competing in the women’s 11-12 age group where she also did well to take 13th place.

In the NDP 4 men’s 13+ age group Henry Ashton did extremely well to place 5th, narrowly missing out on a medal. In the NDP 4 women’s 11-12 age group Molly Macgregor became our 3rd qualifier to Team East by taking 2nd place and the silver medal in a very tight competition. Our women’s team in the NDP 4, 13+ age group all completed their routines successfully and it was extremely close between all 3 with Sophie taking 13th place, Sam 14th and just behind them Anya in 16th place. The team also placed 3rd.

In the top competitions of the day, Ali was forced to withdraw due to injury, that left Macy in the NDP 6 women’s 11-14 age group who did extremely well to place 4th, narrowly missing a medal, but being offered a reserve space on Team East. And our final competitor, Sydney, again competing in a fiercely competitive women’s 17+ group. Unfortunately an error on her final move meant she had to settle for 5th place this year.

So a long day came to end and the Regional Season drew to a close. Cangaroos gymnasts left the hall mostly satisfied and as a club we came away with 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal and three gymnasts qualified to the Regional Team with a further 2 in reserve.

As a club, our gaze now turns towards the National season and our senior gymnasts. The first of these National Competitions is the first English National Qualifying competition in Eastleigh on 13th & 14th April. We wish all our national competitors well in the coming season.
