Cangaroos travelled to Gillingham for the last National competition of the 2022 season. In fact this was not just any National competition, this was a friendly international competition that is now in its 18th year and attracts competitors from all over the globe. The bi-annual competition is in memory of a trampolinist and international Coach who had a great influence on many in the sport in the 70's, 80's and 90's, including our Head Coach Tony, who was coached by Dave in the 1980's when he lived in Yorkshire.
This years competition included Olympians and international teams from Brazil, Mexico, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as UK clubs. The Club had 3 entries, Lucas Coleman-Denny, Esme Rowlandson in the 9-12 age groups and Lilia Kearney in the 15-16 age group.
Lucas was first up and with 26 competitors in his group, ranging from 9 all the way through to 12 he was easily the smallest and youngest, (as Saturday was his 9th birthday) in the biggest group he has ever competed in. Two successful routines were completed and he was placed a very respectable 19th. Esme was next to compete, also in the 9-12 female group, which had the biggest entry of the competition with 36 girls competing to qualify to the last 8 finals. Esme performed well and also successfully completed her 2 routines and was placed 26th in a very competitive group.
Lilia was last to compete and with 26 in her group also, the competition was fierce. Lilia had a high scoring 1st routine which put her in a good place to challenge for a finals place, but an unfortunate error on her 6th move meant she had to settle for 19th place.
Our thanks to coach Tony and judge Jane for Saturday's support. Without the support of our coaches and judges supporting our gymnasts in these competitions just would not be possible. Tony lost his tracksuit and donned his suit and tie to judge all-day Sunday.
This ended the 2022 season. We wish all those competitors all the best for the Regional schools qualifier which takes place on 20th November in Hitchen. Then a short rest before we start the Regional season with the first Regional qualifier in Harlow on January 22nd.
