After weeks of preparation Cangaroos travelled to Telford for the first English qualifier of 2022 and the clubs first national comp since the pandemic started with 5 gymnasts competing.

For the silver competition on the Saturday, we had Lily, Esmeralda, Amelie and Albie. Lucas came to watch to get a feeling for the competition so he feels confident for the next one in July.

Esme was first up in the women’s 9-10 age group, following an early start and for her first national competition we were both delighted that she placed 16th in a very strong field of 21 gymnasts, following two very secure routines with a final score of 69.270 for her two routines.

Next up was Lily, again competing in her 1st national comp in the women’s 11-12 age group. With 33 in the group it was going be a good test for her. A good 1st routine was recorded and she was lying in 22nd place, with an even better 2 routine Lily finished the comp in an amazing 7th place with an overall score of 77.927, virtually securing her place at the English Finals later in the year.

Amelie and Albie were competing at the same time at opposite ends of the hall, so Tony was running up and down between the panels during their warmups and competitions.

Albie competed first, in the men’s 17+ age group, unfortunately an error during his first routine meant he was only marked out of 7. However, her recovered well in his second routine to complete the skills and record a total score of 66.675. With 16 in his group, most quite a few years older and more experienced it was a challenge. Looking for a better outcome at the next national competition.

Meanwhile, Amelie was competing in the women’s 15-16 age group and again a strong contingent of 20 entries. Unfortunately, an error in both routines meant Amelie finished 20th but she did complete her routines in warm-up so there were positives from the performance. That concluded the 1st day and we looked forward to day 2. A less hurried start for day 2 as our first competition was a later start and with just Lilia competing, a much more relaxed day for Tony.

A great 1st routine for Lilia in the Gold Women’s 15-16 grade, this was certainly her best form scores for a routine at this difficulty. Her second routine was executed as planned and despite a penalty for not doing the minimum difficult score a total score of 82.510 saw her take 13th place.

As always we cannot attend these events without the support of our officials and coaches. so the club would like to offer a huge thank you to Jane Macrae for judging for us and for Tony who covered 10,435 steps on Saturday alone supporting our gymnasts on the competition floor.

The club is now looking forward to the next competition which will be the Spring cup 2 back in Telford in May and then the Regional Finals in Cambridge in June.
