Cambridge Cangaroos achieved their best-ever British Championships results at Telford International Centre, with Nicola Bannister crowned British champion and Sienna Scarrow winning silver and bronze medals across a standout weekend for the club.
Sienna qualified for the National Age Group Finals in the 11-12 Women's category, while Nicola secured direct qualification for the British Championships in the Women's 15+ Disability Category 2. Evelyn Fuller, who trains with Cangaroos and competes for sister club Impulse, also qualified in the 13-14 Women's category. The National Age Group Finals took place at Telford International Centre on 3 October. The top 24 gymnasts in each age group, having qualified through two rounds earlier in the year, competed for medals and places at the British Championships the following day.
Evelyn opened with an excellent score of 40.60 in her first exercise. An error on her fourth skill left her second exercise incomplete, resulting in a total of 59.11 and 24th place. Finishing among Britain's top 24 after consistent performances throughout the season remained a significant achievement in an exceptionally strong field.
Sienna arrived at the finals after a season of continuous improvement in execution, difficulty and Time of Flight, medalling at almost every competition she entered. At Telford, she produced a season-best first exercise of 41.04 before scoring 45.43 in her second routine for a personal-best total of 86.47. The performance earned her third place, a bronze medal and qualification for the British Championships Youth competition.
The following day, Sienna returned for the British Championships Youth competition, which combined the 9-10 and 11-12 age groups. The 16 highest-scoring gymnasts contested a qualifying round for eight final places. Sienna improved on the previous day with a personal-best voluntary exercise score of 46.99, qualifying for the afternoon final in second place.
Nicola then competed in the Women's Disability Trampoline Category 2 15+ event. After experiencing pain related to her disabilities during the preceding month, her participation had been uncertain. She nevertheless completed two high-quality exercises, scoring 24.60 in round one and 29.40 in round two. Because disability categories do not use Time of Flight as a scoring component, their scores are not directly comparable with those in mainstream competition. Nicola secured first place and became British champion for the first time, an outstanding result after an interrupted period of training.
Sienna then returned for the Youth final. Competing second meant waiting for the rest of the field to complete their exercises before her placing was confirmed. She produced a personal-best difficulty score of 8.6 and a round score of 46.67 to secure second place and the silver medal, finishing 0.5 points ahead of the third-placed competitor - a significant margin in trampoline. The performance made her British Championships runner-up.
Cangaroos finished the championships with a bronze and silver medal for Sienna and a gold medal for Nicola - the club's best-ever results at the event.
The club thanked everyone who supported the medallists throughout the season and praised the collective effort behind its success. Cangaroos will next compete at the National League Finals in Derby on 24 and 25 October, where it hopes to field 15 trampoline and double mini-trampoline competitors - its largest-ever contingent at a national final. Cambridge Cangaroos recently secured a new training centre in Sawston after leaving its home of seven years in Whittlesford. The club welcomes anyone, from near or far, who would like to try trampoline and join the Cangaroos community.
