Ten Cangaroos gymnasts travelled to Telford having qualified in 14 events for the English Championships. These ten gymnasts had competed at two qualifying events earlier in the season, along with a further 4 gymnasts who unfortunately did not quite make the qualification scores required.
While the sunshine was beating down outside and England was preparing for a football match 5,000 miles away, our Cangaroos gymnasts were performing in a non-airconditioned arena in front of hundreds of spectators, family and friends. And what a performance it was, two gold medals, one Silver medal and two bronze medals, with a whole plethora of Personal Best achievements, including highest overall scores, highest difficulty scores and highest Time of Flight scores.
First up on Saturday were James Smith on the DMT in the Silver 13-14 Male and Sienna Scarrow on the Trampoline in the Gold 11-12 Female. James executed 2 amazing passes, and qualified into Final 1 (top 8) and then into Final 2 (top 4), successfully competing his highest ever difficulty and secured the Silver medal with a score of 21.3.
Sienna qualified into the 8 person Final in 2nd place after two huge exercises and a Personal Best in Time of Flight. Everybody stepped up their game in the Final and Sienna was delighted to take the Bronze medal and 3rd place in England.
Pattie Dobbyne was next to compete on the DMT in the Silver 13-14 Female. Following 2 great passes, Pattie qualified into Final 1 (top 8) and executed her highest ever difficulty and secured a 6th place finish.
Nicola Bannister was competing next on the Trampoline in the Gold Disability Category 2 15+ competition. After a season out last year due to health complications, this has been a comeback season for Nicola and what a superb end to the English season it turned out to be. Two well executed exercises saw Nicola progress into the Finals and a solid third exercise saw her take the Gold medal and become English Champion.
Sienna Scarrow has only just taken up DMT and after a successful season finds herself competing in the Silver 11-12 Female English Championships. Two strong passes in the compulsory rounds saw her progress to Final 1, a very tight pass in that saw her qualify to Final 2 and a strong final pass saw her take her 2nd Bronze medal of the day and 3rd place. What an amazing result for a talented girl.
Freya Carter was competing in her 2nd season at the highest level of Gold in Trampoline 13-14 Female. After a few wobbles in training and the last two competitions, it was great to see her complete both exercises and place 20th out of 32 entries.
Eloise Symons was next to compete in Trampoline, Silver 13-14 Female. Two very assured exercises saw her qualify into the final in 2nd place. A great 3rd exercise was not quite enough to secure a medal, finishing in an agonising 4th place. Pattie Dobbyne was next to compete on trampoline in the Silver 13-14 Female event. Two quality exercises were not quite enough to make the final this time, however she finished in a very creditable 16th out of 32 competitors. Nicola Bannister was in our last competition of day one, competing in her first ever DMT championships in the Female 15+ Disability Category 2. Three successful passes saw her take her 2nd Gold medal of the day and crown another English Champion.
Day two saw us return to the International Centre where we were greeted with a few sore heads who had watched the England men's football team progress into the semi-finals of the world cup. However, at the English Trampoline Championships, five Cangaroos were competing for glory with Lilly, Rhiannon, Lily and Lilia on Trampoline and Liannah on DMT.
First up was Lilly Hardy, competing in the Bronze 13-14 Female event. Two solid exercises completed and she took 12th place in a competitive group.
Next up was Liannah Le Roy-Tickner, competing in the DMT Silver 15-16 DMT event. Two superb passes in the qualifying rounds saw her score a PB and Club record score and PB and Club record Difficulty score. A successful Final 1 pass saw her move into the Final 2 in 2nd place. Unfortunately, an error on her mount skill meant she could not compete the intended pass. It was 4th place in England, still an amazing result.
We were back to the Trampoline competition for Rhiannon Monie, in the Silver 17+ Female event. An error in her 1st exercise on move 6 meant that qualifying finals was not going to happen, but she returned with a strong 2nd exercise and recorded a 29th place finish.
The Lily Carter was competing in her 1st Gold Championships in the 15-16 Female event and after producing two great routines and scoring a PB for her overall score she placed a hugely credible 17th in England.
Our final competitor of the day was Lilia Kerney, competing in the Gold 17-21 Female event. Lilia has been working her way back into competitions this season and successfully completed both exercises to place 23rd in England.
With that we close out the current round of competitions. We have the summer to prepare for the British Championships in early October, where Sienna and Nicola will be bidding for medals at the highest levels and then following that we have the League Finals, where a whole host of our gymnasts will be seeking glory. Congratulations to all our gymnasts who have competed this year and have qualified for the two remaining finals of the National season.
